Infection of a pregnant woman with Zika virus through a mosquito bite (right) results in replication of Zika virus in the embryo. This replication process uses cellular proteins (light blue) that are required for neuronal growth, thus the brain cannot develop properly. On the left side the neurons (green) in the embryo of the healthy woman can develop properly.
